Kids are motivated to reach their daily challenge, and then repeat that feat every day. By aiming to eat mostly good foods – unhealthy snacks are not completely banned! – means that children benefit from a more balanced diet. The chart also sets daily targets of drinking the recommended 6 to 8 cups of water. Best of all, whilst following the Eat Well Chart, children learn important food facts on the way. Our research shows that after using the chart, children have better understanding of the levels of salt, saturated fats and sugars in the their diet and gives them strategies and motivation to reduce them. This will help children acquire and maintain a long-term healthy eating diet and help prevent eating-related health problems. The Eat Well Chart uses the familiar Traffic Light Scheme devised by Public Health England; colour coding of the 86 fun illustrated pieces to help the child instantly identify healthy foods and unhealthy ones. Using the chart also encourages healthy eating swaps: eg a smoothie instead of a sugary drink to reach the daily target and also prompts children to try healthy snacks. The Eat Well Chart is a useful life hack for eating better; parent and child can use the chart as a healthy meal plan using the green healthier food pieces and often find ways to help the family eat well for less.
